01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Near Ayase Station, Meibutsu Yakiton Tomichan Ayase Honten is a lively izakaya where seats begin filling soon after the 4 pm opening, according to diners. The signature grilled skewers come in five- and ten-piece assortments seasoned with salt, sauce or miso, alongside a wide choice that includes shiro, kikuabura, harami and kashira. They make a substantial bite. A natural partner for the skewers is the “All-In Stew,” whose slowly simmered ingredients bring plenty of flavour to the table and pair well with beer or black Hoppy.
Beyond the grilled dishes, the small plates include low-temperature-cooked gatsu, hatsu and tan, as well as the “Supremely Delicious Negi Liver,” paired with a spring-onion salt sauce—plenty to keep drinks coming. For a lighter round, pair a Shitamachi Highball or ginger-forward gari sour with quick bites such as lightly pickled cucumber or Ippudo-style spicy bean sprouts.
Inside, counter and table seating accommodates everything from a solo drink to group gatherings. All-you-can-eat and all-you-can-drink plans are also available, making it easier to enjoy the closing dishes, including hormone yakisoba and “Serious Fried Rice.” The izakaya can get busy, so if you are planning a group meal, it may be reassuring to consider booking ahead.
